Overview
Process Server in Croatia: How Service of Process Works
Croatia has objected to Article 8 and Article 10 in their entirety, so postal service and private agent service are not valid — requests must go through Croatia's Central Authority, typically completing in two to four months. Notably, Croatia bears the costs of service itself rather than requiring reimbursement from the requesting party, a more generous position than most jurisdictions. Execution methods have modernized: documents may be served by email, a court officer, a competent administrative body, a notary public, or directly by the court through electronic channels under Croatian law.
Who serves process
Who Can Serve Legal Documents in Croatia
Croatia is a civil-law country. The Central Authority is the Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation in Zagreb, which passes requests to the courts.
Croatia objects to every Article 10 method and to consular service, so the Central Authority is the only valid route; both the Hague Conference and the U.S. State Department confirm this, although some commercial websites say otherwise. Documents should come with a Croatian translation, and Croatia bears the costs of service.
The documents most often bound for Zagreb and the rest of Croatia are a statement of claim with a summons to appear, plus orders, subpoenas and other court notices. We serve in Zagreb, across Zagreb & Central Croatia and out to Coastal & Dalmatian Croatia.
Proof you receive: certificate or sworn affidavit
After delivery in Zagreb or elsewhere in Croatia, you receive the court's record of service from the court, with an English translation if it is issued in Croatian.
Central Authority Filing
We prepare and submit the Hague request to Croatia's Central Authority for execution through the court system, taking advantage of Croatia's modernized service methods.
Certified Croatian Translation
Documents served under Article 5(1) must be accompanied by a Croatian translation. Certified Croatian translations are prepared for the full set of papers before they go to Croatia, whether to Zagreb or Coastal & Dalmatian Croatia.
Electronic Service Coordination
Croatia permits service by email, notary public, or other electronic channels under its special law — we confirm eligibility and coordinate the fastest compliant method for your case.
Treaties
Hague Service Convention and Croatia
Croatia is a party to the Hague Service Convention, so documents can be sent to its Central Authority, which arranges service and returns a Certificate of Service. Croatia has made a declaration on Article 10, which limits service by post or by private agents, so we confirm which methods are open before choosing one.
Croatia is also a party to the Hague Evidence Convention, so witness testimony and documents can be requested with a Letter of Request.
