Overview
Process Server in El Salvador: How Service of Process Works
El Salvador is one of the newest parties to the Hague Service Convention, acceding on March 21, 2024 — the same date as the Dominican Republic — with entry into force on October 1, 2024. El Salvador filed declarations touching Articles 5 and 8 of the Convention, so the specific mechanics of its Central Authority process are still relatively untested compared to longer-established Hague jurisdictions. As with any very recent accession, litigants should confirm current Central Authority practice directly before filing and build extra time into their case timeline.
Who serves process
Who Can Serve Legal Documents in El Salvador
El Salvador is a civil-law country. The Hague Service Convention has been in force for El Salvador since October 1, 2024. The Central Authority is the Supreme Court of Justice (General Secretariat), which also serves as its Central Authority under the Inter-American Convention.
Requests and all documents must be in Spanish or translated into Spanish, and the Central Authority accepts requests by post or email using the model form. El Salvador's Hague listing doesn't state a position on postal or agent service, so we confirm it before relying on those methods. The Inter-American Convention with the U.S. remains available as a second formal route.
For defendants in San Salvador or elsewhere in El Salvador, the usual starting point is a demanda (complaint) with its citación or emplazamiento (summons); orders, notices and enforcement papers follow later in a case. Defendants may be anywhere from San Salvador to Eastern El Salvador, and we cover the whole country.

The Salvadoran court records the service, and the Supreme Court returns the Hague Certificate of Service.
Central Authority Filing (New Regime)
We prepare and submit Hague requests to El Salvador's newly designated Central Authority, accounting for its Article 5 and 8 declarations.
Certified Spanish Translation
We prepare certified Spanish translations for documents intended for service through El Salvador's Central Authority.
Realistic Timeline Guidance
Given how recently the Convention took effect, we provide conservative timeline estimates and confirm current practice directly with El Salvador's Central Authority before committing to a filing date.
Treaties
Hague Service Convention and El Salvador
El Salvador is a party to the Hague Service Convention, so documents can be sent to its Central Authority, which arranges service and returns a Certificate of Service. We check its declarations on postal and direct service before choosing a method.
El Salvador is also a party to the Hague Evidence Convention, so witness testimony and documents can be requested with a Letter of Request. El Salvador and the United States are both parties to the Inter-American Convention on Letters Rogatory and its Additional Protocol, which offers another formal route.
