Overview
Process Server in Portugal: How Service of Process Works
Portugal has lodged no objection to any of the Article 10 alternative channels, making it one of the more flexible Hague jurisdictions covered on this site: postal service, direct service by a bailiff or solicitor (agente de execução), and the formal Central Authority route are all valid. Portugal's Central Authority is the Directorate-General for the Administration of Justice, and formal service through this channel requires a mandatory Portuguese translation of the document, its summary, and any annexes. Portugal reports one of the faster standard timelines among Hague signatories: 30 to 60 days.
Who serves process
Who Can Serve Legal Documents in Portugal
Portugal is a civil-law country. The Central Authority is the Directorate-General for the Administration of Justice (DGAJ) at the Ministry of Justice in Lisbon, which sends requests to the court or official for the area where the person lives. Service is usually by registered mail with acknowledgement of receipt, or in person by a court clerk or enforcement agent (agente de execução).
Portugal has not objected to any Article 10 method, so postal service and direct service by a competent Portuguese professional are available. For service through the Central Authority, a Portuguese translation of the documents, summary and annexes is mandatory.
The documents most often bound for Lisbon and the rest of Portugal are a petição inicial (initial claim) with a citação (summons), plus orders, subpoenas and other court notices. We serve in Lisbon, across Northern Portugal and out to the Autonomous Regions.
Proof you receive: certificate or sworn affidavit
The court or agent records the service and returns it to the Central Authority, which sends back the Hague Certificate of Service.
Fast Central Authority Filing
We submit the Hague request to Portugal's Directorate-General for the Administration of Justice, taking advantage of Portugal's typically fast 30-to-60-day turnaround.
Certified Portuguese Translation
Formal service through the Central Authority requires a mandatory Portuguese translation of the document, its summary, and any annexes. We prepare complete, compliant translation packages.
Bailiff or Solicitor Direct Service
Since Portugal has not objected to Article 10(b) or (c), direct service by a court clerk, implementing agent (agente de execução), lawyer, or solicitor is a valid alternative to the Central Authority route.
